Exercising at Home

Physical therapy

Physiotherapists are primary health care professionals with a significant role in health promotion and treatment of injury and disease. They combine their in-depth knowledge of the body and how it works with specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability.

Exercise Rehabilitation/Active Rehabilitation

Building physical strength, endurance and coordination is vital in managing disability. We create adapted fitness programs so that individuals gain optimal physical abilities in order to resume many of their pre-injury activities. We also assist with physical readiness for their return to work following injury.

Aquatic Therapy

For a faster recovery, just add water.

If you have sustained an acute or chronic injury, undergone surgery, sustained a non-operative injury, or are in pain and would benefit from a reduced weight bearing or more comfortable environment for your rehabilitation, then aquatic rehabilitation is for you.

Benefits of aquatic therapy include a client's ability to reduce joint and soft-tissue swelling from the natural pressure of water. In addition, the viscosity of water and aquatic therapy allow a patient enough resistance to strengthen muscles and improve joint function. Aquatic rehabilitation reduces the amount of stress placed on joints so it is especially well suited for patients who are in pain and are weakened due to an injury or disability. The decreased joint stress enables patients to exercise more easily and with less pain.

More exercise, less pain — faster recovery.

Occupational Therapy Consulting

SMART Rehab can complete assessment at the client’s residence to objectively identify problems with activities of daily living that had been altered because of an injury, disability, or chronic illness.  This assessment allows the occupational therapist to both evaluate the client’s abilities and make recommendations related to maximizing level of independence, and providing assistance with activities that can no longer be performed.

Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation

Our therapists at SMART rehab have worked extensively on inpatient and outpatient spinal cord injury programs at GF Strong.

  • Assessment and prescription of assistive technology, including seating and positioning devices

  • Home access assessment and recommendations

  • Upper extremity neurological rehabilitation, including splinting

  • Skin and wound assessment, awareness and prevention

  • Consultation on complications related to aging with a spinal cord injury

  • Consultation on neurological bowel and bladder

Ergonomic Assessments

Ergonomics is the study of people's efficiency in their working environment. The goal is to achieve maximum performance while minimizing any risk of injury. Ergonomic assessments are important to employers who would like to keep their employees in good health and more constructive in the workplace.

Stroke and Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Following a brain injury, individuals may find they have physical, mental, emotional and speech difficulties. Brain injury impairments are unique to each person and can range from mild to severe.

Our team of Occupational Therapists, Kinesiologists, and Rehab Assistants will work with you to reach your functional goals.

Return to Work Services

Each engagement includes early and consistent communication with the client, primary care physician, insurer and departmental manager/health & safety representative. After gaining worker consent, our consultant therapist can obtain medical and functional information and compare this against pre disability and alternate job demands to identify return to work opportunities and communicate this to decision makers. This includes job site visits, job demand analysis, work hardening and work conditioning.

Wheelchair & Mobility Assessments

Assessment of the client’s physical and cognitive status, home/community access requirements, available funding, and anticipated changes in function over time enables selection of appropriate manual and power mobility options, pressure relieving seating systems and mattresses. Consultants liaise with equipment vendors & implement trial periods to ensure proper selection before a final purchase is made.
